You supervise an administrative assistant who has been struggling with his tasks at work; failing to arrive to work on time, ignoring phone calls, taking inaccurate notes, using a rude tone with callers, and taking extended breaks and lunches. You've heard from his co-workers that he is having emotional problems, but he has never said anything to you directly. You have given him reminders, verbal warnings, and additional training to help his performance. You have just informed him that he is being terminated, when he tells you he has an anxiety disorder and is taking medications.
