Assignment
Scenario:
Gilbert Herschel is scheduled to be executed next month, charged with murdering a police officer in 2005. The case against Herschel is built entirely on eyewitness testimony - in fact, the only physical evidence of the crime are bullet shells and casings collected at the scene (no DNA evidence). Over the last several years, two out of the five witnesses have recanted their testimony and have implicated another suspect in the murder of the police officer. You are a juror for Herschel's final appeal and the jury has been in deliberation for weeks. It's now your turn to sway your fellow jury members either in favor of (i.e., Herschel will NOT be executed next month) or not in favor of (i.e., the execution date remains) the final appeal for Herschel.
Task:
Based in the research on eyewitness testimony, you will decide (state your position on) whether or not Gilbert Herschel is a victim of false identification. In other words, you will choose a side in the case of Herschel's appeal. Prepare a 2 page (minimum) argument to be presented to your fellow jury members in which you either 1) discuss the specific factors that contribute to reliable eyewitness testimony (AGAINST the final appeal) OR 2) discuss the specific factors that contribute to unreliable eyewitness testimony (FOR the final appeal).
In order to prepare this assignment, you will need to review the material related to eyewitness misidentification and eyewitness memory in your textbook (8.3 Problems with Memory) along with the various supporting documents posted within this Chapter 8 Dropbox Assignment link (below this instruction document). In order to receive full credit for this assignment, you MUST incorporate a minimum of three different supporting resources (e.g., three of the supporting documents or the textbook and 2 supporting documents). Remember to summarize/paraphrase information in your own words and then, provide the appropriate citation. No reference list is required, however you MUST incorporate and cite a minimum of three supporting sources of information.
