The biggest disadvantage is that you're losing face-to-face communication, in most cases other than a video chat. While it is more convenient, you also lose the push for parents to be more actively engaged in their child's learning because they can be "active and engaged" over the phone or through texts. Intentions and motivations can also be misinterpreted over the phone or through an email. Face-to-face communication can clearly display intentions without getting them twisted. Another disadvantage is that some parents may not have access to the specific tools needed for the type of communication.

Some disadvantages could be that it's hard to read someone's tone over an email or text so someone may become offended when the person who messaged them did not intend it in the way that person took the message. Another disadvantage could be that if you aren't paying attention, the wrong person could be messaged therefore the possibility of personal information is given to the wrong person.
