Scenario:
You are the Team Leader at Bee's Knees Community Centre (BKCC) and have organised an external activity for program participants. Participants will visit a 5-star restaurant on one of the days it is closed to the public and learn how to cook three nutritious meals under the guidance of the restaurant's head chef. You need to meet with the following three parties before the activity takes place, to discuss their specific communication needs and put strategies into place for the day of the event.
Non-worker roles
Client: Your communication need is a hearing impairment. You are a service user at Bee's Knees Community Centre. You would like to participate in the group however you are concerned that, with your hearing impairment, you will struggle to find your way to the venue. You are also concerned that you may not be able to follow the instructions of the chef, which could lead to embarrassment and mistakes. You are meeting with the Team Leader prior to the event to discuss your needs and concerns.
Colleague: Several years ago you were a leader on an excursion and saw an unexpected risk arising. You gave instructions to the group that could have prevented an accident, but they didn't listen to you and a serious injury occurred to a child. During the incident investigation, participants claimed that you had lost control of the group and didn't have the presence and confidence to be a leader. This has undermined your confidence and given you low self-esteem in relation to facilitating group activities.
You have been asked to go on this activity as a co-leader, which you had originally agreed with the understanding that this will help to restore your confidence. However as the day approaches your stress levels are rising significantly and you are unsure whether your group will respect your position and listen to you. There are no other staff members able to replace you at this late stage and you are meeting with the Team Leader prior to the event to discuss your needs and concerns, and put some plans in place.
External party: Your communication need is English as a Second Language. You are the head chef of the restaurant and have learned the key words required in the kitchen, and your staff understand your instructions even though some key words are given in your first language. However you are worried that your ability to understand and respond to questions from the visiting group may be affected, and that you may become embarrassed. You are meeting with the Team Leader prior to the event to discuss your needs and concerns.
