Be aware of and understand your perceptions

D.I.E. method:

Forces us to pause between steps and before we jump to conclusions

Step 1. Describe

The information gathered when we see, hear, smell, touch, taste

Step 2. Interpret

What we think about when we see, hear, smell, touch, taste Consider other options: what else could it be / mean / etc.?

Step 3. Evaluation

What we feel about what we think and what kind of assessment of value - positive, negative or neutral, we attach to our interpretation

Using the "I" Statement instead of the "You" statement

Template: "I have a concern. When I saw your (behavior), consequences happened. I felt (feeling). I would like positive outcome. How would you feel about trying preference / suggestion?"

Creating "I" statements

1. Identify a problem / scenario

2. Claim ownership of your perceptions of the problem

3. Describe the behavior that presents the problem

4. Express the concrete consequences of the problem

5. Express the feelings you experience as a result of the problem

6. Express a preference for change, asking for ideas and perhaps offering suggestions
