The purpose of the course is threefold: to introduce the students to the classical foundations of the field, to illustrate some of the fundamental statistical issues and phenomena that are relevant to the business operations, and to introduce a broad areas of business statistics. Through the exercises, the course also aims to develop your application, synthesis and conceptual skills of Business Statistics.

With its myriad of techniques, concepts and formulas, business statistics can be overwhelming for many of you. You can have trouble recognizing the importance of studying statistics, and making connections between concepts.

This course will help you see the big picture of the business statistics as it gives clearer paths to learn and choose the right techniques. It underlines statistical concepts that are important to students majoring in business. The modules take an applied approach and relate the concepts and applications of statistics to the functional areas of business-accounting, marketing, management, and economics and finance. This course also emphasizes the proper use of statistics to analyze data and assumes that computer software is an integral part of this analysis.

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of the course you should be able to explain and apply:

1. Introduction and Data Collection.

2. Presenting Data in Tables and Charts

3. Numerical Descriptive Measures.

4. Basic Probability and some Important Discrete Probability Distributions.

5. The Normal Distribution and Other Continuous Distributions.

6. Sampling Distributions and Confidence Interval Estimation.

You would be given three topic areas. You could select one of the given topic areas to write your scholarly paper.

1. Exploring Different Data Collection Methods.

2. A Study into Numerical Descriptive Measures.

3. Exploring Basic Probability and Discrete Probability Distributions.

4. A Study into Different Types of Distributions.

5. Fundamentals of Hypothesis Designing and Testing.

6. Free Topic: If you do not like to select any of the given topics, as an alternation, you could write the scholarly paper by choosing a topic related to this subject area.

When writing your research paper, please note the following guidelines:

- Select one of the given topic areas above to write your scholarly paper no less than 1000 words (excluding the title page, bibliography and appendices). Please e-mail your professor an outline and specific title of this paper, prior to starting it. In addition to your primary text, you are required to use a minimum of 5 additional references from professional journals and books to produce your scholarly paper.

- Your research paper must adhere to the style and format requirements set forth in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Your paper must include a title page, headings and a bibliography. Footnotes are not needed. The bibliography is to be used to reference quotes and other previously written works. Appendices containing support information can also be added.

- Your paper must be in your own words.
