Task - Individual Essay and Re?ection

Purpose: The objective of this task is to not only explore various health issues, vulnerabilities and inequities for populations with di?ering cultural needs, but also to re?ect on your own learning and cultural awareness as a future healthcare provider.

Instructions: This task is an individual assessment and should be written separately from your group assignment, although it does require you to refer to the same topic you have addressed in the group task.

The essay is made up of two components:

1) the topic chosen and discussion related to the components below;
2) Self-re?ection.

The ?rst part of this essay should include discussion about the following (approx. 1400 words):

1. Describe your chosen topic and how it a?ects one's health and the health of the Community?

2. Use current statistics (less than 5 years old) to illustrate the burden of this topic / issue for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples compared with non-Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.

3. Describe how the history of colonisation has impacted on the development of this topic / issue for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

4. Identify and discuss the impact of TWO (2) social determinants of health on the development and progression of this topic / issue

5. Discuss the cultural implications and obstacles to addressing this topic / issue for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples

The second part of this essay should include re?ection on your discoveries and thoughts about your learning journey, in researching about the topic f or this population and your c ultural awareness, as well as studying this subject, overall (approx. 400 words). You may want to use some of t he insights from your self-re?ection and journaling throughout the semester and discuss what you have learnt about yourself and how you saw/now see this topic f or t his population. The Gibbs Re?ection Cycle may be helpful for you here.

Note: The usual e ssay formatting is r equired. Each essay should have an Introduction, an Essay body- which will include the main discussion about the topic and the population, and 1-2 paragraphs of Re?ection, followed by an overall Conclusion and Reference List.
