Homework: Nursing
Overview:
The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA) has provided writing style guidance to countless students in health professions education and continues to be one of the most requested styles for citing sources. In 2019, The APA Manual was updated from the 6th to the 7th Edition, bringing change across almost all chapters. For example, as the use of inclusive language is increasingly important in our communication, the 7th Edition addresses the use of bias-free language with more extensive guidelines.
Purpose:
The purpose of this homework is to provide students with an opportunity to complete a short writing task, including pre-writing (considering your topic/thesis), developing an outline, composing a guiding thesis statement, crafting a compelling essay, proofreading, and revising. Each student will develop an essay with a thesis statement that argues for reducing bias in language around ONE of the following topics:
1) Disability
2) Sex and/or Gender
3) Race and/or Ethnicity
4) Socioeconomic Status
Find a peer reviewed article that uses possibly biased language in one of these four domains, explain why you believe that language to be biased, and offer suggestions to improve the article.
Process:
Read homework instructions completely (and request clarification) until you are confident with the instructions.
Draft an outline, and from that a paper, that develops a compelling argument for reducing bias in language (in one of four topic areas noted above). Be sure to include:
An introduction;
A thesis statement;
Three or four well-constructed body paragraphs with evidence/examples supporting your thesis statement;
A conclusion that summarizes the argument and addresses the ever-important question: "So what?"
Give your paper an appropriate title;
Include at least two references on a Reference page, with in-text citations. Explore the use of a citation formatting/management tool (e.g., EndNote, Zotero). While not mandatory for this homework, bibliographic referencing software will be required in subsequent homeworks). Now is a good time to get no-risk early feedback on using such a program.
