Topics
Below is a list of topics that you can choose from. Depending on your approach, each could be the basis for an essay. Remember, you need to choose a specific aspect of the topic, as each has many facets that could potentially be explored. It is required that you have to engage the related course readings.
1. Explore the social implications of new media technology from the aspect of the regime of commodification or(/and) the regime of surveillance. Try to explore the issues such as the partnership between the profit driven data mining industry and the state, and the eroding of public trust toward the state, data justice and data as common goods. Use actual cases to elaborate your arguments.
2. Use Stuart Hall's encoding-decoding model to analyze a media event. Examples include the Gaza-Israel conflict, the pro-Palestine movements on North American campuses, or the Canadian government's capping of the number of international students. Select multiple media sources to enrich your analysis.
3. How do we understand the statement "the medium is the message" in the era of the Internet and social media? Drawing form McLuhan's insights, try to use tangible social media examples to underscore how the technological structures of the Internet and social media overshadow the content they contain. And how these new technologies and platforms have transformed communication patterns and alter all aspects of social relations.
Procedure:
1. Identify the topic: be specific, clear, and relevant to our course content.
2. Do the research
3. Develop research questions/arguments (in coherent logic)
