Your local newspaper asked three citizens selected at random to respond to the following question:
To what extent should governments pursue their own national self-interest in an international world?
Citizen I
I don't care what the rest of the world thinks. I want my nation to do what's best for our economy, our safety, and our beliefs and values. Why should we concern ourselves with problems on the other side of the world when we have our own concerns on our doorstep?
Citizen II
We are living in a globalized world. We need to participate in this international system by involving ourselves in organizations like the U.N. Our economic systems and our security needs are affected by the actions of others. Even the humanitarian needs of other nations will end up affecting our nation in the end. It's in our best interest to concern ourselves with international issues.
Citizen III
What kind of human being are you if you can see the suffering of other people and turn a blind eye because they are not the same skin colour or religion as you? As human beings and Canadians, we have a responsibility to the rest of the world. We are in a privileged position, and we owe it to those who are less fortunate, even if they are different from us. As a country we need to act and help the less fortunate!
