Assignment:
This assignment is designed to allow for students to explore the historical experiences of harm,
You'll start by deciding if you'd like to engage with the residential school system, or the forced sexual sterilization of people labelled with an intellectual disability. You'll then spend time exploring the resource listed below related to your topic.
Residential School System - you'll review the Final Report from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. You'll want to focus on the history section. We're exploring harm here, so students may want to explore the later half of the history section where you can find headings such as deplorable conditions, hunger, abuse, discipline, resistance from the community. Students can also explore the legacy section to recognize the lasting impact and harm of residential schools.
Sexual Sterilization - You can focus on one individuals story, or move between the stories. The videos vary in length, and cover both eugenics and newgenics.
As you're exploring, and after you've explored you'll consider the following questions:
- In what ways did social workers and other helping professionals contribute to and cause the harm of these practices? In what ways is that harm explicitly discussed? In what ways is that harm implied?
- What power structures are evident in the harm being discussed? What forms of oppression and privilege are embedded in the dynamics? Which of those are explicitly recognized, and which are implied?
- What current day practices continue to perpetuate the harm being shared in these stories?
- What course concepts are evident in these stories? (Eg. Models of help, value systems, theories)
