Assignment:

Do you know where your last chocolate bar came from?

Today's global economy is a complex network of exchanges and connections that reaches far beyond the candy machine outside your classroom or the store access the street. A piece of chocolate, a cup of coffee, or a smartphone links the wealthiest resident of a world capital to a subsistence farmer in Africa. In today's world, we are all deeply connected.

Anthropologists have often traced the movement of commodities to reveal the global connections between producers and consumers, rural and urban communities, and people and nations on opposite sides of the world. Tracing the movement of commodities (food items) illuminates the human dimensions of globalization that are often obscured by distance and marketing.

For this assignment, you will explore the global economy of a chocolate bar by answering the five questions below. It might help to eat one before you start. :-)

  1. What are the ingredients in your chocolate bar (you do not need to list all ingredients just the first 5)?
  2. Where do the ingredients come from?
  3. What are the working conditions of the people who produce the cocoa?
  4. Which international corporations dominate the chocolate trade?
  5. How is chocolate marketed?
