Short Paper Assignment - Your Role as a Prescriber
Part 1 - Use headings to organize your paper, citations & APA format for references
In this paper, you will explore the extent of your prescribing role based on the federal and the state laws where you will practice (consider the location you are in now). Consider the following related to Advanced Practice Registered Nurse prescribing laws (2-3 pages):
1. Are there any specific number of pharmacology hours or content specific areas needed during your pre-licensure education (now) to be able to be qualified to prescribe and or be licensed?
2. What is the prescribing level you can expect based on your state's policy and board (in some states APRNs cannot prescribe narcotics for example)?
3. Will you be able to prescribe independently, collaboratively, with supervision and what does this require (to be supervised by an MD for example)?
4. What is the process to be able to prescribe (what types of licenses do you need)?
5. What are the requirements for you as an APRN to prescribe narcotics/controlled substances?
6. Is there a required educational component to maintain your ability to prescribe once licensed?
7. Can APRNs prescribe medical marijuana in your state, if so what are the requirements to do so? What if you worked at a Federal health system in your state such as the Veterans Administration could you prescribe medical marijuana?
8. Can APRNs prescribe Medication Assisted Therapies in the treatment of addiction such as Suboxone (buprenorphine and naloxone) for opioid addiction? If so what are the requirements to do this?
A. After describing the requirements in your state, please consider if you feel this process insures safety both to you and those you prescribe. Reflect on these requirements are they reasonable?
Part 2 - It is not uncommon for family or friends to request both assessment and prescription treatment?
1. What are the legal and ethical aspects of this practice?
2. What is your state law regarding this practice?
3. What is your personal feeling about the practice?
4. How will you address this issue if you should be called upon to prescribe for a family or friend?
Part 3 - Now think about your role as a prescriber and the legal and ethical issues of informed consent.
1. What is the best practice approach to insure consent (comprehension and agreement by the patient to the risks and benefits) to treat when prescribing a medication or discontinuing one? 2. Consider off label prescribing and how you feel about that practice, and what are the legal implications of off-label prescribing?
Note - Practicing in Massachusetts in the USA. Need 3-5 pages and use APA 6th Edition. Brevity and clarity of expression.
