Discussion Post: History/Systems of Psychology- Orienting to the History of Psychology
Getting Started
You've certainly heard the names of the important figures instrumental in the developing history of psychology. Names like Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, Carl Jung, and B. F. Skinner, among others, might initially come to mind. But you may be more familiar with some of the popular ideas or concepts embedded in their theories than the people behind the ideas. For example, you've heard of "free association," or "inferiority complex," or "birth order," or even "cognitive dissonance." These are ideas that have emerged from psychological theories to become part of how we talk to one another about human behavior.
The questions you are asked to respond to in this discussion will help you dig into what you already know about the history of psychology. This prior knowledge acts as a base for expanding that knowledge. We need to connect the people, events, and ideas in this historical timeline if we are going to fully understand the significance of modern psychology. So use this discussion as a brainstorming session that will help jump-start your thinking while you are inspired by some of the observations and ideas of your fellow classmates.
Upon successful completion of this discussion, you will be able to:
1. Explore the broad historical landscape of psychology.
