1. First, explore some local news sites in the Middle East , including the Lebanon Daily Star, Jerusalem Post, Jordan Times, and Palestine Life to name a few and look for 3 short articles about events happening in a specific region of the Middle East. Make sure to use a site in the Middle East and not something from BBC, CNN, etc. If you are not sure, ask your instructor. One should be an article from the news and current events in the area, one article should be related to local business news, and one article should reflect the culture and society in the chosen region in some way. Articles found under Life, Lifestyles or Culture would be appropriate for the final article.

Summarize each article and explain the what, why, how and where. What is your opinion of it? What have you learned from each of these articles? What cultural images or ideas do these stories evoke, if any? Why did you choose the particular article? How do you think it is written? Is it biased? Is it fair and balanced? Where did you find it.

2. Look at a Western news site, a list can be found in the Recommended Resources and Writing Guides. See if you can find an article about the current news event that you found on a local Middle Eastern news site. If you cannot, try to at least find an article about the area or the people you have written about. Read the article and compare/contrast the information and media slant (if any) with the other articles you have read. Do you believe that the Western media portray events in the Middle East much or slightly different? How are they similar? How are they different? Why?

Make sure you include the URL for each article that you read and summarize in this assignment, as well as cite each article properly and include it in your bibliography or Works Cited list.
