Unit 19 Electronic Devices and Circuits - Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Foundation Diploma in Engineering
Learning aim - Explore the safe operation and applications of analogue devices and circuits that form the building blocks of commercial circuits.
Assignment - Analogue electronic devices and circuits
Vocational Scenario or Context
You have been offered your first job as a Junior Technician in a local company that specializes in repairing domestic electronic equipment.
As part of your new role the owner would like to provide opportunities for you to develop your skills and knowledge of electronic devices and circuits.
They would like you use a range of test equipment and software to investigate commonly used analogue electronic devices and the types of circuits in which they are used.
They have asked you keep accurate records of everything you do so that you can refer to them later as you build up your skills and knowledge base.
Task:
Carry out theoretical and practical investigations into analogue devices and circuits.
Overview
You need to investigate:
• Diodes and how they are used in a rectified power supply with voltage regulation.
• Transistors and how they are used in a stabilized common emitter amplifier.
• Operational amplifiers and how they are used in amplifier circuits.
You need to provide detailed evidence of your work and evidence that you have consistently worked safely in accordance with relevant risk assessments.
To do this you will need to work systematically following the detailed instructions below.
For each of the circuits detailed below, each student is issued with their own individual table of values of components and parameters which must be used. If you use the wrong values, you will be asked to repeat the work using the correct values. You are advised to use Excel for producing tables of results and graphs (plots, charts), which should then be copied and pasted into your report which should be in MS Word format (landscape, A4).
[Assessor's note: You should provide, at the beginning of the chapter on each circuit, a hyperlink to the circuit schematic which should have your allocated values. The hyperlink will help you to return to the circuit at ant time, and to avoid editing the values again.]
To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to:
Simulate, using captured schematics, the correct operation of at least one diode, transistor, and operational amplifier circuit.
Build at least one diode, transistor, and operational amplifier circuit safely and test the characteristics of each one.
Explain, using the simulation and test results, the operation of at least one diode, transistor, and operational amplifier circuit.
Simulate, using accurately captured schematics, the correct operation of at least one diode, transistor, and operational amplifier circuit.
Build at least one diode, transistor, and operational amplifier circuit safely and test the characteristics of each one accurately.
Analyse, using the simulation and test results, the operation of at least one diode, transistor, and operational amplifier circuit.
Evaluate, using language that is technically correct and of a high standard, the operation of at least one diode, transistor, and operational amplifier circuit, comparing the results from safely and accurately conducted simulations and tests.
