Values Clarification and Options Counseling

We all hold values that guide each of our interactions - some of these values we are well aware of and others exist below the surface shaping our interactions without our awareness. We're going to explore some of the values we each hold that shape our perspectives on pregnancy options (parenting, abortion, adoption).

The impact of such values clarification exercises is most critical when we consider the nurse's role in non-directive, unbiased options counseling for clients with an unintended pregnancy. It is very easy to allow our biases to creep into discussions and sway decisions that are not our's to make and it is our professional obligation to not bring our biases to our interactions with clients.

Abortion Care

We will explore the care needed for folks who have an abortion. An abortion is the removal of products of conception (which generally includes an embryo or fetus) from the uterus. This typically involves either taking medication to expel the tissue at home or having a procedure in a clinic or hospital.
