In her ethnography, Zenana, Laura Ring argues, "The two nation theory, which underpinned the call for partition, held that Indian Muslims were a nation because they were ‘one.'

But once Pakistan came into being, this "theory" set the stage for an intransigent ideological struggle between an ideal "Islamic unity" and ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity" (2006: 119).

This struggle between an Islamic/Urdu/sharif identity and an ethnic one is evident in several instances described in Ring's book. Using detailed examples from the text, discuss how they reveal these tensions between "Islamic unity" and "ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity."
