Question: The personal narratives and short stories we have been reading this semester invite their readers to question memories, identities, and the relation between an individual and their (cultural, ,political, economic, historical, etc.) contexts. As such, these are not just the stories of the author or of a character, but personal and intimate explorations of broader questions abour identity, difference, language, and power. In Formal Paper #1 you will offer an analysis of two of these works in a Compare and Contrast Short Essay. Your essay should include a Thesis Statement, Supporting Arguments, and Support and Evidence (Quotes) from the Text. The goal of the paper is to examine an idea, theme or trope of the texts and to expand on that as the focal point of something larger to understand about the personal narrative, short story, or poem or combination of them (compare and contrast) that you have selected. Think about some larger ideas like Identity, Language, Communication, Gender, poverty, stereotypes, parenting, economic exploitation, the value of hard work, the American Dream, sexuality, ethnicity, and so much more. Think about combining ideas: how does Jamaica Kincaid complicated the struggle between individual goals and community goals (the fight between the "I" and the "we"?), how do both Olsen and Alexie examine the realities of economic exploitation on parenting decisions, how is the American Dream deconstructed and challenged in Franzen and Ng's pieces? Another essay could compare and contrast girls or young women who struggle with a set of instructions for how to grow up in a society that has a set of rules (sometimes obvious and sometimes, not-so-obvious) to follow in society or in ethnic communities (see the combination and conflating of themes?) for appropriate behaviors about how to be the right kind of "girl" or how to "behave" or how to "be this thing or this other thing" in "Girl" by Kincaid or "How to Be Chinese" by Ng." Perhaps an essay could explore ethnic identity in Daisy Hernandez and Sherman Alexie's pieces. There are many possibilities and angles of approaches. The focus of this paper is truly up to you.
