In this assignment, you'll explore one of the most controversial pieces of legislation in US History - the Dawes Act. The Dawes Act fundamentally changed federal government policy from one of isolation of Native Americans onto reservations to one of assimilation of Native Americans into larger society.

- search for "Dawes Act"
- Read the article
- Write a 2 page paper that summarizes both positions (for and against) and then analyze the arguments. Was the Dawes Act an acceptable plan? Was there an alternative solution? Is the greater good an acceptable reason for passage of laws?
