Big data, often called data science or data analytics, offers an approach to exploring broad topics using computational methods to identify patterns and trends. Technological advances have revolutionized patient and healthcare data collection, storage, and analysis. With increased digital and computing technologies, the capability and capacity to collect and analyze data have increased dramatically (Carter-Templeton et al., 2021).

Data provide the ability to improve clinical outcomes, manage populations, provide patient-centered health care, and reduce cost.

Nurse leaders should have enough knowledge to be aware of the types of data that should be requested to monitor patient care and opportunities for community health. Not only do nurse leaders make certain that their teams fulfill the data standards, but they also make certain that their teams get the data they require for decision-making. The leaders who are most likely to be successful in improving outcomes and lowering healthcare costs are aware of the data that are lacking and who support their teams in their efforts to collect extra data to understand better and manage care.
