Question: "The construction of sympathy or mutual self-interests;"
Contact zones and middle grounds - social spaces where two cultures come together, clash, and ultimately blend to form a new hybrid culture.
Project Objectives
After completing this learning unit, students will be able to:
Show mastery of the critical concepts of negotiating differences in the assigned readings.
Analyze an assigned reading, identifying the central thesis and a critical supporting passage.
Analyze a cultural representation to show how it expresses cultural hybridity.
For Project #3, we will be completing the following
Read and post on the assigned readings and class discussions;
Complete a group presentation. For the group presentation, you will examine an aspect of U.S. popular culture and how it illustrates cultural hybridity and fusion. Possible projects include music, art, television, film, and sports.
An alternative to the group presentation and essay assignment is to create an art, music, or media project where you explore breaking down borders between communities and cultures. To do this, start a conversation in the student lounge and design one or more projects. You will want to find a way to make your project public by displaying it on social media or creating an installation.
