Filters, Attenuation, Required phase response of the filter to guarantee distortion free transmission
1. A filter has the following characteristics:
Attenuation = 1.0 dB from 0 Hz to 1 kHz.
From 1 kHz to 10 kHz attenuation increases from 1 dB to 41 dB in a straight line when plotted on axes of power in decibels (vertical axis) against log frequency ( horizontal axis).
a. Is this a low pass, high pass, band pass or band stop filter?
b. What is the attenuation per octave between 1 kHz and 10 kHz?
c. What is the increase in attenuation between 5 kHz and 10 kHz?
d. Is this an ideal filter or does it behave like a real filter?
2. A signal has frequency content (i.e. a spectrum) that extends from 100 Hz to 5 kHz.
The signal is passed through the filter in the Question above.
a. Will the signal be distorted at the output of the filter (Yes/No)?
b. If your answer to part (a) is yes, explain why distortion occurs.
c. If your answer to part (a) is yes, explain how you could compensate for the distortion and create a linear system.
d. What is the requirement on the phase response of the filter to guarantee distortion free transmission?
