In the first two lectures Professor Ambrosio delineates two approaches to the question of the meaning of life:
The genetic approach, the way of the hero, in which explanatory factors act within historical space and time, and The metaphysical approach, the way of the saint, which emerges from a point beyond and apart from history Professor Ambrosio goes on to try to characterize several modern points of view as fitting into one approach or the other.
