In 2011 a new form of pathogenic E. coli emerged in Europe that caused bloody diarrhea and a kidney disease called hemolytic uremic syndrome in many victims. The organism (O104:H4) was unusual in that it carried a gene for a distinct form of enteroaggregative pilus, produced high levels of Shiga toxin, and carried a distinct set of other virulence genes never seen assembled in the same strain. What is the most likely explanation for the appearance of this new organism?
