(a) Contrast the THREE (3) metaphors of conflict. With reference to your own experience, give ONE (1) illustration of each metaphor.

(b) At the recent town hall meeting, Mary, Head of HR, asserted that her department should have the authority to decide who is to be hired since it had the experts on hiring. Thomas, the recruiting manager, yelled and counter-argued that since the immediate supervisor was responsible for employee performance, Thomas had the final say. Thomas also claimed that his view was supported by other line managers.

(i) Identify the type of conflict between Mary and Thomas. The CEO noted that Thomas and Mary seldom got along well with each other and advised Thomas to exercise self-monitoring to minimize further conflict. Explain how selfmonitoring might help to reduce the conflict.

(ii) Propose TWO (2) soft influence tactics and TWO (2) hard influence tactics that Mary can adopt in order to reduce the conflict.

(c) Tom has just started his family. He is shopping around for a used car. He is determined to get the best deal he can for the money while the original owner seeks to maximise the value of his asset. During the three-hour long negotiation, both parties behave like adversaries and dig into their own positions. After haggling with one another, each side still could not agree on a price point acceptable to both parties. There are TWO (2) basic types of negotiations. Which type of negotiation does the above scenario demonstrate? Discuss.
