Case Study: You are a director and the theatre of your dream has given you total freedom to direct one of the plays we have read this quarter, giving it a radically new treatment by either choosing an approach based on Epic Theatre, Theatre of Cruelty, Expressionism, etc. or by espousing one of the tenets of both the Harlem Renaissance and the contemporary Indigenous theatre scene among others, namely by re-staging a play we have studied with the driving principle of doing liberatory theatre for, by, near and about a specific community. Note: you cannot simply re-stage a play in its original style (for instance Machinal cannot be done in an expressionist style). Instead, you must provide an original vision. To research your approach you will want to re-read the play in detail, consult your class notes and do some outside research (you must have two sources in total). To present your vision, write a paper that:
Question 1: Briefly presents the play you would choose to direct, giving us a short synopsis of the plot with your analysis of its key themes and characters. This might be an opportunity to take on a play with which you have a complicated love-hate relationship, or a way to amplify a play you already like...
Question 2: Explains why you think this play would benefit from the specific treatment you have chosen: what would be gained? What political or social commentary would it allow you to make? What revision or adaptation could you make via the use of this style?
Question 3: Describes with specific examples how you would apply this style and its techniques to your production in terms of acting, scenic, costume and lighting design, etc.
