Assignment: Business Communications- Team Business Report- Micro Plastics and the Apparel Industry
Purpose of Assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to showcase student ability to persuade, write, and present.
Scenario
Sports Tech is a successful (yet fictitious) sportswear company that produces moisture wicking and stretchy clothing based in the United States. Consumers are asking the company about the issue of micro plastics or microfibers in clothing that are polluting the ocean. The company is proud of its track record in corporate social responsibility, especially when it comes to the environment and its products.
Task
Sports Tech has tasked its Manufacturing and Marketing team to research and write a report and presentation explaining if micro plastics or microfibers are issues that must be addressed by the company. The report should explain what micro plastics or micro fibers are and how they affect the environment and how the industry is responding to the potential environmental impact of its products. How are other companies in the industry responding to the environmental challenge of micro plastic or microfibers?
Research Considerations
You might start your research by consulting the United States Environment Protection Agency's Fact Sheet of plastic particles.
Consult, NBC's Denise Chow article entitled "Fight against plastic pollution targets a hidden source: Our clothes."
Be sure to review the websites of several corporations to explore how those companies are responding to the issue.
Part A: Written Evaluation
You will need to draft a memorandum report that succinctly explains what your company should do about microplastics.
This will require you to use basic business writing principals as presented in the writing rubric:
1. Proper memorandum format
2. Proper addressee (research the name of the CEO)
3. Proper use of sources using APA format
4. Include an introductory statement that foreshadows or "sells" the main idea
5. Use deductive structure, using strong topic sentences and supporting data
6. Condense information using tables, charts, graphs and bulleted points when appropriate
7. Use well developed headings
8. Use chunked paragraphs
9. Use transitions efficiently
Business Writing Criteria
When you present your information, I will be evaluating your ability to write clearly and succinctly. In other words, get to the point. What is the most important information? I should be able to scan your document and pick out key information quickly and efficiently. If I cannot skim the document in under two minutes and get my key questions answered, then you did not do your job.
Part B: Presentation Evaluation
The second part of this evaluation focuses on your public speaking ability. As a team of consultants, each analyst, each student of the team is required to give a three-minute persuasive presentation to Sports Tech executives, explaining the issue thoroughly, its relationship to Sports Tech and the apparel/textiles.Each student must provide 4-6 PowerPoint slides as a visual aide. The students should identify the wants and needs of your audience, so for this evaluation, the student will be presenting to the CEO of the company (ably played by your instructor). As such, I strongly recommend that you research your audience before presenting. Additionally, professionalism will play a big part in your role, so you need to think about what it means to be professional. Students should dress professionally for this presentation.
