Scenario: You are a HIM professional employed as a data analyst in Happytown General Hospital. As part of an overall EHR implementation strategy, your facility has recently implemented a computerized ADT system, and a few departmental applications for Lab, Radiology, Dietary. The next phase is implementation of a CPOE (Computerized Provider Order Entry) system.
You are reading the latest copy of the Happytown Newsletter and see that the project team for this next phase has just been announced. You read through the list of team members (twice), and see the names of the Chiefs of each clinical service, the VP of Nursing, Director of Finance, a staff nurse, representatives from Pharmacy, Laboratory, and Diagnostic Imaging, and note that the project leader is the Director of IT. You cannot believe it -- there is no representation from the HIM department!
You immediately go to the Director of HIM Services, and state that you cannot believe there is no HIM representation on this important project. You further state that you believe that a HIM professional has valuable insights, skills and knowledge to contribute to such a project. His answer to you is that if you feel so strongly about it, that you should put forward a proposal stating your case for including a HIM professional on this project team. If you write a convincing proposal, he will present it to the Senior Executive team for consideration.
Your Assignment:
Complete a proposal which explains all of the benefits of having a HIM professional on the CPOE Project team. Your proposal should be no more than two pages in length.
**Remember that your goal is to ensure that HIM is represented on the project team, so you want to give your Director of HIM Services a very strong case to take forward. **
