Description

Choose one character from each of three plays (two from different comedies we've read, and one from Hamlet) and write a paper comparing the three. Frame the paper with an argumentative thesis that makes specific points about the plays and characters considered. For example, you could write on Baptista in Taming, Egeus in Midsummer Night's Dream, and Polonius in Hamlet, examining their comparisons as Shakespearean fathers. Papers failing to meet these basic requirements will not be accepted. You should also feel free to visit me to discuss your paper topic and thesis. Research is not required -- I am not interested in reading the observations of the critics; I want to read your observations of the text. This will require a method of

introducing your reading of the text
quoting a passage of the text that supports your reading,
explaining in detail what it means, and then
logically connecting this meaning to the text as a whole.

This pattern of idea, quotation, and explanation is the method of all competent literary analysis. Many students find the greatest reward and challenge of the course in explaining what the lines from Shakespeare mean in their own words.
