ETHICS IN THE WORKPLACE
Title: Good or bad?
Explain what you would do in each of the situations below. Justify your answer by explaining the moral issue at hand and the possible consequences for the employee (worker) and the company.
Case 1
One of the perks of your job is an expense account that reimburses your restaurant meals upon presentation of a receipt. During a visit to a restaurant, the owner of which is a good friend, the cashier asks you the amount for which she must issue the receipt. What do you answer?
1. The exact amount.
2. The amount, plus the tip.
3. Any amount goes over business expenses.
Case 2
An electrician comes to repair an electrical problem in the company building. He offers you to pay everything with or without an invoice. The amount without invoice is approximately 25% lower than the amount with invoice. As a manager, what do you do?
Case 3
You are the director of human resources in a company that is looking for an employee. Successful candidates will have to undergo a five-question interview prepared by you and your supervisor. Or, one of your childhood friends would like the job. He learns, during one of your phone conversations, that you know the interview questions. He begs you to give them to him so that he prepares adequately and increases his chances of getting the job. What are you doing ?
Case 4
One of your subordinates, who is a foreman, comes to complain about a colleague's lack of cooperation. Moreover, he admits to you "confidentially" that this colleague, also a foreman, but in a department for which you are not responsible, takes advantage of his position to have his employees carry out work unrelated to the company at his personal residence during working hours. Are you becoming an informer or not?
Case 5
You are employed in a pizzeria. Your boss is on vacation in Mexico for the week. You have to deal with closing at 11:00 p.m. On Wednesday evening, around 10:15 a.m., you are very tired. No orders have been placed since 8:30 a.m. You have cleaned the restaurant and everything is ready for closing. Do you close shop or do you wait until 11 p.m.?
