Case: In order for nurses to provide safe and effective care, they must be able to communicate clearly and accurately with each other, as well as with other healthcare professionals. Using an SNL allows nurses to document the care and interventions provided to a patient in a consistent and unambiguous manner, which reduces the potential for inaccurate assessments and interventions.
The American Nurses Association (ANA) has approved 13 SNLs for use. The SNLs are built into the electronic health record, and you may not even know you are using a language specific to nursing. The most commonly used SNLs are NANDA and NIC & NOC. Using SNLs also allows organizations to identify the value of nursing care by querying the electronic record, which decreases the need for manual audits.
