Question: For this week, we want to examine the impact of visual media in terms of persuasion; for this discussion board, you will select a still image (no video or animated gifs) and attach/insert it into your post and provide an analysis of the rhetorical agenda - what is the image attempting to convey, who is the apparent target audience, and what resistance might be engendered by it.
This week we will continue looking at non-traditional forms of persuasion by looking at how images can play a role in influencing us just as readily as words (or combinations of words and images as well). Of course, the effectiveness of this is carried in the context, so understanding the background of an image is important. To this end, there are two articles and a narrated PPT on the subject matter to review before tackling the discussion board assignment.
Regarding the discussion board, I should note one stumbling block for students when doing it, and that is simply grabbing any photo and then interpreting it in some fashion, rather than finding a photo with a clear message to it (advertisement, meme, political cartoon, news story photo, etc.) and explaining how it is attempting to persuade or enhance persuasion within that context, so please make sure the image you find meets this criteria. Random pictures/stock photos without context will not work for this assignment; the image should convey an obvious message.
