I personally feel that it is unethical to use someone's social media against them unless they are bad-mouthing the company. I believe that what is done on someone's personal time should be their business and only their business. I myself am professional at work but there are times that I do go out and post pictures of friends and family on social media. What I do on my personal time does not reflect my performance at work. I can understand that there may be some questionable post from people but I don't think it should be a determining factor on whether or not they get the job. I don't think that employee's should be looking at social media when they are at work on company time. I believe this should be stated in the employee handbook.

Good morning professor and class,
Social media is always a hot topic when it crosses your professional and personal life. In past years it has returned to haunt politicians and business owners because it reflects the person's true nature. If someone says they support a cause like opposing animal testing but have an old picture of them in front of an animal they killed with their bare hands, one might assume that is not how they feel. The issue with social media is it cannot be erased. They call it digital performance, which is put on the internet and will be viewable forever.
When you work for a company, you need to represent its values. If you work for a conservative company but are naked online, you are not the right fit for the company. If you post negative information about an industry you work in, you do not represent the company well. I understand the argument that you should be allowed to be yourself in your time, but a company has the right to know its employees and their attitude towards their industry. An employer feels they pay a wage to receive the mindset and work from an employee. If they are not receiving what they think they are, they should not have to pay to keep an employee. This is a difficult lesson. I have tried to teach my children at a young age they can not remove things from social media and to be careful with their safety. My children still make mistakes, and I know they have been warned. My best advice is to be careful online and true to who they are. They should choose a different career field if it conflicts with their professional life. We are not designed to work in a place we are unhappy. We should find that balance that matches our beliefs, making it easier to commit fully to our chosen company.
