Assignment - Individual Essay
Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the nature and role of management
- Explain work and non-work in a modern society
Essay Question - To what extent you would agree with the following statement: "Managers do more than 'coordinating resources"?
According to CMI (Chartered Management Institute, 2013) managing people can be more complex than many of us assume. With a number of new 'employee protection' legislations being continuously developed and empowered by the Trade Unions and the Government (i.e conditions of service, Mental Health &wellbeing, Paternity Leave, Carer's leave, holiday entitlement, etc), it became paramount to efficiently embed the 'work and non-work' related issues into day-to-day management planning.
Guidance -
In this essay, you should use Herzberg's Two Factor Theory and Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs as a framework for your discussions on the issues surrounding work and non work that need to be taken into consideration by managers and leaders in their planning routines.
Summarise the essay by justifying your choices in contrast with other existing academic views on this topic, and demonstrate your position/view with regards to the above-mentioned essay statement.
Essay structure -
Introduction - Consider the following: - who said that management is "co ordinating resources"? When? Is management any other tasks? What are they?
Managing People - Staff are an expensive resource. The skills needed to manage them effectively will be different according to: the organisation, their skills, the task, the management style used. So perhaps the tasks of managing according to Fayol need to change in response to the needs of the employees to be EFFECTIVELY managed.
Meeting aims and objectives -
- A manager's role is to achieve productivity, efficiency and a satisfied workforce.
- Use Maslows Hierarchy to show the management tasks needed to motivate employees at each level.
- How might some of the health and well being initiatives fit into the hierarchy?
Other management theories - Are there any other theories that present a better model of management activities? Give an overview. How do they compare to the work of Fayol which is nearly 100 years old! How do the new theories compare when a manager is trying to build effective relationships with their subordinates?
Summary - One or two paragraphs to summarise the facts given previously
Conclusion - so how much do you agree with the statement based on your research and findings? Is management still about coordinating resources? Should it be more about people skills? So is being good at the five management tasks enough to be a good manager with a good team of staff?
