Question: What to include in your Reflection and Analysis Papers

In each Reflection and Analysis Paper, you will discuss your personal thoughts about and responses to the assigned readings for the unit (which are listed on your course outline and available in the Primary Resources folder of each learning module). Please include all of the following sections in each Reflection and Analysis Paper:

1a) Choose a short quotation (minimum 1 full sentence, maximum one short paragraph) from one of the assigned readings in each of the two weeks in the unit you are reflecting on. In other words, select two quotations in total, one from each of the two weeks in the unit. Choose passages that you find particularly interesting or thought provoking or challenging or disturbing or illuminating. Include the two quotations you have chosen, with an in-text reference for each, in your Reflection Paper.

Then explain why you chose each quotation. What did you find interesting/compelling/challenging/disturbing/ illuminating about each passage? Please be specific.

b) How do the two quotations you have chosen relate to one another? How do they relate to the theme or focus of the unit? Please explain the connections you see and be specific.

2) Describe your emotional reactions to each of the passages from the readings that you quoted in question 1 - and/or to the articles as a whole. How you feel about each quotation/article? (Some options are intrigued, uncomfortable, surprised, pleased, displeased, angry, inspired, defensive, disbelieving, or impressed - but there are many valid feelings. The key is to become aware of your own emotional responses.)

Next briefly explain why you think you feel the way you doabout these passages. In other words, identify and analyze the source(s) of your emotional responses. What factors do you think influenced your emotional responses to these passages?

Please be as specific as possible and remember that this question is about feelings rather than thoughts (you discussed thoughts in your response to question 1).

3) How do the issues we are exploring in this unit relate to your personal experiences outside this course? How could you use what you have learned in this unit to your life outside this class (your social circle, family, work, other classes...)? Please chose a quotation from one of the assigned resources for this unit (NOT one of the quotations you chose for question 1) that you might share with someone in your life outside this course. Include the quotation (with an in-text reference) in your assignment and briefly explain who you might share it with and why. What effect(s) do you hope the quotation might have on that person? Again, please be specific.

4) What part(s) of these readings are you still confused or unsure about? What further questions do you have about the topic/issues addressed in the readings or in the unit as a whole?
