A forensic scientist generally classifies evidence into known reference samples and questioned samples or samples of unknown origin. Comparisons are then made between the unknown samples and the reference samples. A forensic scientist may then be able to suggest the source of the unknown samples and the reference samples.

Read the two case scenarios and list the questioned samples and reference samples that you think should be collected from each scenario, including any that are already listed in the case scenarios. Do not just limit the evidence to biological evidence. Explain why you think the evidence that you have chosen will assist you to solve the case.

Scenario:

On July 18, 2023 at 8pm, Jill Jones and Pete Smith met at a local bar. At 9:45pm, Jill & Pete left the bar together. As Jill did not have a car, Pete offered to drive her home. On the way home they stopped at a park overlooking the city lights of Raleigh. Jill alleged that Pete sexually assaulted her in the car. Jill also alleges that during the assault Pete bit her on the shoulder through her T-shirt.

Medical Examination of Jill Jones:

The alleged assault took place at 10 pm and the medical examination was conducted at 1am. A sexual assault investigation kit was taken and handed to the police. This kit contained the following items:

-A 10mL vial of blood containing EDTA from Jill Jones

-A vaginal swab from Jill Jones

A vaginal smear from Jill Jones

-A saliva from Jill Jones

-Jill's underwear and T-shirt were also submitted to the laboratory for examination.

Examination of Crime Scene:

A white stain was located on the front seat of Pete's car. A number of other stains were present in the vehicle.

Police Recored of Interview with Pete Smith

Police interviewed Pete about the alleged sexual assault. Pete alleges that he gave Jill a ride, and on the way home they stopped to look at the city lights. He said that he did not have intercourse with Jill Jones. Pete consented to a medical examination and the following samples were collected:

- A 10 mL vial of blood containing EDTA from Pete Smith

-A saliva sample from Pete Smith
