Assignment:

The "Little War on the Prairie" podcast concludes with the following:

One place to see fake history? On the state flag of Minnesota. The image on the flag, the state seal, was chosen by Henry Sibley. It shows a white farmer behind a plow tilling the soil. He's looking up to watch an Indian ride away on a horse. In the original, he's literally riding into the sunset. The Indian looks back at the white man. As far as you can tell, he's leaving willingly.

  1. Explain why this dominant narrative is "fake." How has the podcast challenged this official account of the state of Minnesota and its relationship with the Dakota peoples?
  2. Why did people like Biewen, who grew up in Minnesota, not know about this history of the Dakota peoples? What are some of the reasons for this "silence" or "erasure"?
  3. If Biewen had narrated to us all the information that he learned from Westerman and Wingerd instead of using their voices, what different effect would the podcast have? Was it good or important for you to hear their voices?
