The contractor for a major water treatment plant renovation asks for your professional opinion regarding the use of a flat plate lintel for man-doors in several new buildings. The buildings are single story with a rood line 6 feet above the man-door opening is constructed from clay brick that is 12 inches thick and weighs 115 psf. the opening of the man-doors are 3 feet 4 inches wide. The architects requires a deflection limitation of L/400. The contractor wants to use a steel plate that is 5/16 inch thick and 10 inch wide. Assume the plate will be fabricated from A36 steel. Will the plate work?
