Question: Explain why some economists have argued that a strategy for working shorter hours is the best response to the problem posed by widespread automation in the workplace, where people are replaced by machines and lose their jobs. Then explain why other policy wonks have argued that a guaranteed annual income is a good plan to deal with automation. First, discuss the problems associated with widespread automation. Refer to the documentary we watched in class called "The Future of Work." Then refer to your lecture notes and the article on Canvas by McNeill in module 3. What are the economic benefits of working less? Then compare that to the plan for a guaranteed income, as explained by Andrew Yang in the Future of Work documentary. Which one do you think is a better idea? (Also read the article in module three about Iceland and watch the video on vacation time in Italy). Lastly, there is another benefit of working less that is not economic. It's discussed by Marx in the essay on realm of necessity and realm of freedom. What benefit is that? What is your view on all of this?
