Problem: Dr. John is an orthopedic surgeon and is evaluating Mary Miller today for severe hip pain. The patient stated that she slipped and fell a few days ago. She did not have any pain or swelling on the day that the injury occurred, but over the last few days, the pain has progressively become worse. Dr. John orders a hip x-ray which shows a partially displaced total femoral shaft fracture with slight calcification. Dr. John recommends immediate surgical treatment in order to avoid any further displacement of the fracture. The same day, Dr. John performs an open reduction with internal fixation (a rod and 3 pins were placed in the femur to correct the fracture) of the femur.
