Problem

A. Discuss the value of reading aloud to children. Whether you're planning on becoming or are already an early childhood educator or a parent yourself, you will likely play a role in at least one child's life, perhaps as an aunt/uncle or a neighbor. Throughout the semester, we'll be listening to children's books read aloud and you'll be reading a number of different genres of children's books while keeping an Interactive Reading Journal. I encourage you to reflect on this concept intermittently throughout the semester as you encounter different literature and different approaches to reading aloud.

Grenby's "The Origins of Children's Literature" suggests that "[t]here are three different kinds of origin to consider...First, there is the historical genesis of children's literature as a commercial product. Second, there is the idea that children's literature has naturally developed from a culture of adult-to-child storytelling. And third, the biographical accounts surrounding the conception of individual books." Explain why each of these-historical, domestic, and specific and symbolic origins-is important in the development of children's literature with a few examples.

B. Tell us about a few of your favorite Mother Goose rhymes. Do you remember them from your childhood? Tell us what role you think nursery rhymes play in the development of childhood literacy.
