Case Study: Background: Imagine that by utilizing glucose or gluconate, an organism can make all of its amino acid as well as hemes for its cytochromes in the electron transport chain. You then perform a mutant analysis of genes in the central metabolic pathway.

Question: Please explain why a mutation that inactivates the isocitrate dehydrogenase enzyme prevents the organism from growing on glucose, whereas a mutation that inactivates alpha-ketoglutarate ( 2- oxoglutarate) dehydrogenase has no growth effect...
