Problem: Sandel uses the examples of Bill Gates and Michael Jordan to illustrate the amount of wealth certain individuals in our society can amass. The critics of libertarianism in the class claim that they both have prospered to the extent that they have because of any number of benefits they have received from our society and are, therefore, indebted to it. So, taxing them is simply a way for them to acknowledge that they owe society quite a bit for their success; it isn't just a product of their hard work. Later, the defenders of libertarianism suggest that Gates and Jordan have already provided something useful and valuable to society, and so any "debt" they may have owed has already been paid in full. In other words, if society didn't value Michael Jordan's ability to hit a jump shot so much, he wouldn't have made so much money, and, so, the fact that he is as wealthy as he is shows that he has already provided society with all it can legitimately ask of him. Explain which side you think makes the better case and why.
