Assignment - Block Island Wind Farm Case Discussion
I'm studying for my Business class and don't understand how to answer this. Can you help me study?
The Block Island Wind Farm is the 1st offshore wind farm in the United States. Located approximately 3 miles off the coast of Block Island, Rhode Island, its construction was completed in August 2016 and has since been generating power. According to the New York Times, this "small" project consists of 5 wind turbines, capable of providing power to approximately 17,000 homes. The cost for this alternative, "Green" energy investment was $300,000,000. (There is currently a TV commercial airing by Citi, referencing certain renewable energy projects that were financed through them. Appearing in this commercial is the Block Island Wind Farm.)
Apparently, there are some unhappy homeowners who consider the wind farm an "eyesore" due to the turbines hampering views and feel it will potentially lower property values. Is this simply an example of the classic "NIMBY" (Not In My Back Yard) theory or a legitimate concern to local property owners? Do the project's benefits outweigh any detriments and was it worth it the $300,000,000 investment?
Explain whether you are pro or con this project, taking both the unhappy Block Island homeowners' perspective, as well as that of the project's private equity investors into consideration.
