Case Study: I chose Gracepoint Wellness Medical Center for my healthcare organization in Tampa, Florida. This organization combines mental health with substance abuse and general medical wellness for children, adults, and families. It is also the main acute mental health center and Baker Act receiving facility for adults and children in the city of Tampa where I reside.
In reviewing the Gracepoint website, the mission and vision statements discuss the agency's core values of treating patients with mental health and/or substance abuse concerns with dignity, respect, cultural diversity and the highest quality care. However, I was unable to find any statements regarding evidence-based practice until I reached the Behavioral Health section of the website. "Through individual, family and group sessions, our licensed therapists will provide evidenced based treatment to help you on your path to wellness. Gracepoint counseling services begin with a comprehensive assessment to best determine your individual needs. We work together to create a treatment plan that will help you meet your goals. Board certified psychiatrists oversee the care you receive" (Gracepoint Wellness Center, n.d.).
I was impressed by the many diverse services Gracepoint offers, from women's and men's overall primary health, prevention, and weight loss/nutritional services, to more specific behavioral health and substance abuse prevention and treatment programs for both children and adults. They have only recently included medical wellness options to their list of services, whereas before the agency was known to only focus on specific mental health and substance abuse issues. I personally believe that a more holistic based approach to treatment is the most effective way to treat an individual, including focusing on medical wellness and prevention, in addition to mental health and emotional well-being, and addressing comorbidities that may exist and affect a person's wellness, such as drug and alcohol abuse, depression, and healthy eating habits, for example. I would like to see more discussion of evidence-based practice in the medical section of the website, as well as more specific EBP interventions demonstrated in the mental health and substance abuse based areas. Even though I am sure they offer many EBP treatments as the agency is overseen by both AHCA (Agency for Healthcare Administration) and HRSA (Health Resources and Services Administration), these are not clearly defined by reviewing the organization's website.
