Description
With poverty being a long-standing concern, local, state, and federal governments are tasked with funding programs to address it. When you look around your community, do you see organizations that are actively working to mitigate poverty? In what way? What about the related issues of food insecurity, homelessness, employment, and childcare?
Solutions to poverty have evolved since the 1600s, when the first almshouses emerged to shelter those without financial means. Some communities, for example, have tried building villages of tiny houses for the unhoused population; others have worked on tax laws in order to redistribute wealth.
In this Discussion, you explore and evaluate a social welfare program in your area that is designed to mitigate poverty.
To prepare:
Review the Learning Resources on poverty, economic disparity, and the racial wealth gap.
Search for a specific local, regional, or state program designed to address poverty in your area. Some examples are a homeless shelter, a food pantry, a job or housing program, or childcare services.
Review the annual report for the program, if available, or any other data that may be found on the program's website. How many people are served by this program? How does the number served compare to the number of those living in poverty in your area? Is the program adequate to meet the needs of the population?
Main Assignment:
Name one specific local, regional, or state social welfare program designed to address poverty.
Provide a link to the program's website.
Identify and explain the program, including:
oWho is eligible for the program
oWhat the program provides
oThe goal(s) of the program
Discuss whether you think the program is adequate at meeting the needs of those in poverty.
Reflection:
Explain whether or not you agree that the program chosen by someone else described is adequate.
Explain a change you would recommend in terms of program eligibility or services. Explain why.
