Question 1 Language samples are an excellent way to obtain current knowledge on how a client uses his/her language in his/her daily life. In the case of young children, a high-quality language sample allows us to determine the child's functioning level across the 5 parameters of language as well as his or her speech, voice and fluency skills. For this question, let's assume that you have completed a quality language sample for a typical developing 4-year-old. Given that the child is typical, explain what you would find in the 5 areas of language? In other words, what would you expect her to know in semantics, syntax, pragmatics- morphology and phonology? What resources did you use to make these determinations. What would you expect in terms of her overall speech intelligibility to be?
Question 2. Why do SLPs put so much emphasis on early intervention? Explain how communication develops from birth to the production of two-word combinations. Explain the receptive and expressive skills that must be developed in order for a young child to communicate. When does communication begin? What is the role of cognition and play in language development?
Question 3. Discuss the role SLPs have in helping students learn to read. What in our training helps children master the relationship between sounds and graphemes (letters?) How can you determine the level a school age child is reading at? What would you use?
Question 4. Speech Language Pathologists are bound to our Code of Ethics. This includes the role of the SLP and the responsibilities of the Speech Language Pathology Assist. (SLPA.) Using the ASHA Code of Ethics, please explain, what responsibilities are within the scope of the SLPA and those that are reserved for the SLP. Why do we have such a strong delineation as to the roles of the SLP and SLPA?
