Assignment:
I can choose anyone for this activity:
Download the "VoiceMap" app (an account is free) and find the "Dividing Lines: A History of Segregation in Kansas City" tour (also free). The tour begins at Shawnee Mission East High School and takes about 90 minutes to complete. Follow the turn-by-turn directions as the audio narration details how Kansas City came to look the way it does--reflecting a long history of prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination.
Once you are done with the tour, reflect on the following:
1. What aspects of this tour elicited emotion in you? What emotions were they?
2. How did what you watched for this unit explain what you heard in the history of Kansas City? (Any material is fair game to cite here, but you may find it helpful to focus on the "goals" of prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination.)
3. How do you feel about the people that will be establishing professional roots in Kansas city? Given what you known, and your role in the community as a mental health professional (or health professional), what can you do/what might you advocate for in order to continue the change-making process in Kansas City?
