A student wishes to prepare 400 mL of a buffer of pH 8.40 using the base TRIS and its hydrochloric salt. The molecular weight of the salt is 157.60 g/mol and the pKb of TRIS is 5.93. What would be the molar ratio of base to salt for the buffer and how many grams of the salt should be added to the 400 mL of a 0.12 M solution of base to get to the desired pH?
